Recent snow, coupled with freezing temperatures and wind, call for a true winter wardrobe strategy.  Welcome to January in NYC! The city got a nice little snow storm last week and we are due for more flakes tomorrow! This is the time of year when I find it the most difficult to be comfortable and fashionable, so I’ve decided to break down my winter wardrobe strategy by category.

The Layers // In nearly every post above I am wearing a base layer that keeps me toasty. For bottoms I typically always grab my Spanx leggings (I am obsessed with them and have worn here and here) and a simple thermal top (such as this one)! I typically will then layer on a cashmere sweater – Everlane cashmere crews (and they come in over 20 colors) have long been the best bang for my buck. If I have any extra room under my coat I also love adding a padded vest. My Moncler vest is amazing, but quite expensive, so I love this one and this one as more affordable options. In addition to those two key pieces my boot sock selection is always key. When wearing Hunters I typically go for these socks, but with my shorter boots I love this cozy pair.

The Boots // Footwear I find the most tricky. I tend to gravitate toward these Sorel boots when I need the most warmth (I wasn’t a believer until I bought them), but when there is snow on the ground, but the temperature isn’t absolutely frigid, I love wearing the following: my Hunters paired with thick socks, more classic hiking boots, or even shearling lined duck boots!

The Coats // I love a great parka for the snow, such as this one and this one (the green one I am constantly wearing is from Joe Fresh but sadly from 2014). In the unbearable cold/wind I need a more performance based jacket such as this one or this one (sometimes a truly functional coat that does not have fur is difficult to find). When I am simply running from one place to another via the warm subway or a car, I prefer a wool coat. This wool coat and this one have been long-time favorites of mine, but I have also provided links below to a few of my favorite winter jackets that are currently on sale!

The Accessories // Hats, gloves, and scarves! While I love a dainty wool scarf, when the temps really drop I always grab my travel sized cashmere wrap (as seen here). As for headwear, when I am not in the mood to be practical I will wear a beret in the snow, but when really looking for function and warmth I love a not-so-classic beanie! Some of my favorites include this bow one, this pink one on sale and this stripe one! I am not as particular when it comes to gloves but do favor wool mittens!

The Ski Gear // I am nowhere near an expert skier and therefore not necessarily a gear guru, but I have found my Aether ski pants to be my all-time favorite (you can shop them here). They are unbelievably warm, and being ski pants, so surprisingly flattering (I wore them here)! I also wear their system pullover as an intermediate layer while on the mountain. It is an ultra cozy double knit featuring a built-in down collar that replaces the need for a bulky scarf or neck warmer.

In the event that you are lucky enough to be heading somewhere warm (or live somewhere warm and don’t need a true winter wardrobe) you can check out my resort ready picks right this way!
